A MESSAGE FROM SEAN O'RIORDAN...
"I love farce because it is comedy on high octane. It is laughs at the extreme. Funny characters, funny situations, funny lines and funny events. The comic geniuses of comedy mostly work in the farce style - Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson. It draws on the comedy of the old and the new from Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers to filmS like Airplane, Meet the Parents and Anchorman. Farce requires sharp movement and quick thinking skills and is hilarious when put in front of an audience.

The challenges as mentioned above in performing farce is that it is FAST. Fast comedy requires speed of mind, body and speaking because the comedy is coming at you like a machine gun of laughs and you have to be up to speed to deliver it. But once mastered the performer gains confidence at delivering tight dialogue with an ease.

Farce is entertaining because it is designed around the concept that something has gone wrong and the victim cheats or lies to get out of the problem which leads to more and more problems coming their way. The Birdcage with Robin Williams is a film that is a perfect example of farce. Two men, parents of a straight son, cannot tell their prospective in-laws that they are in a gay relationship so one of them pretends to be a woman when the two sets of parents meet up leading to hilarious situations and predicaments. Farce is fun, farce is funny, farce is FAST!!!!"

Sean O'Riordan is an accomplished Director and Writer, well versed in the theatrical style of farce. This play is based on Nikolai Gogol's The Government Inspector and takes its audience on a satirical journal through a post communist fictional state. Mistaken identity and corruption abounds in this modern adaptation. The beauty of farce is the gift of large characterisations and bold plots that provide the actor the opportunity to stretch their acing wings in this not often done style of theatre.

The cast list is long, with lots of doubling of roles, all adding to the theme of mistaken identity and chaos, which permeates the world of this play. With the current world political climate, we can't help but wonder whether this play is a prophetic statement of impending doom, rather than a mere dramatic presentation of the ridiculous.

The large list of character roles will be assigned throughout the first read.
